Where does your waste go?

The Sutherland Shire Council runs its own waste collection service and takes the materials to other companies to process the waste.

Lucas Heights Waste Management Centre
("Menai tip")

Material from the red-lid and green-lid bin goes to the Lucas Heights Waste Management Centre. It is not a Council facility - it is run by WSN Environmental Solutions. For up-to-date information on current times, location, charges etc., please check on the Service's web site at www.wasteservice.nsw.gov.au or call 1300 651 116. (This link will take you away from Sutherland Shire council's web site.)

Garden materials from your green bin is processed into compost at the site. The compost is then used by WSN in other parts of its operations. Large quantities of garden material and recyclables, that won't fit in your bins at home, can be dropped off to Lucas Heights.

Visy Recycling

Material from the yellow-lid recycling bin goes to Visy's Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Taren Point. There it is sorted mechanically and by hand into the separate material streams. The sorted baled materials are then sent to other manufacturers for recycling. For more information about Visy go to www.visy.com.au/

Pioneer Waste Management

Material collected during the Council Clean-Up is taken to Pioneer Waste Management (Address: 2 Bay Road Taren Point Phone: 9526 2642). The material is sorted to recover all of the recyclable materials such as wood, metals and white goods. The remaining material is sent to the landfill.

Mattresses in the council clean-up are collected by Dreamsafe Recycling Pty Ltd. Most mattress components can be recycled. Dreamsafe recycles the wood, wadding, springs, and some fabrics. The recycling process keeps them from landfill. Visit www.dreamsafe.com.au for more information.
